Johnny Depp will be reteaming with Julian Schnabel for In The Hand of Dante. The last time was in the Javier Bardem starrer Before Night falls. Julian Schnabel is known for his work on The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and the lesser work Miral that has just got released.
Julian will be adapting author Nick Tosche’s novel In the Hand of Dante into a film.
The project belongs with Johnny Depp. This is what Julian had to say to the Playlist.
“It belongs to Johnny, but I’m not going to make it for a couple of years. We’re gonna work on writing it, developing it. We didn’t sign anything. It’s just something Johnny asked me to read and I think it’s a great book…”
The rights of the book was bought long ago by Johnny Depp. So he has an interest to get it on the floor soon.
The film is about Divine Comedy and yes the one written by Dante Alighieri. The novel intertwines three characters: 1) Dante, himself 2) Louie, a mobster who ends up with what may be an original manuscript of the Divine Comedy and Nick Tosches, a man charged with verifying the book’s validity.
This is going to have some interesting multiple narratives and Julian can go wrong if he has the right actors. The last time was a mess with the casting of Frieda Pinto in the proceedings. Depp will be perfect for the role of the author.
